WASPS
Wasps, considered a nuisance pest for some but also a serious danger to others due to the allergic reactions their stings can cause in some individuals.
HORNETS
This insect is larger than the common wasp, measuring in at 19-35mm and is banded yellow and brown.
Despite its larger size, it is not particularly aggressive.
What to do if you find a wasp/hornet nest
Finding a wasp or hornet nest on your property or building can be distressing and also poses the risk of being stung.
If you are concerned that you have a wasp or hornet nest on site contact ACD Pest Control as soon as possible.
We will treat the nest and even offer a free re-treatment if the first treatment is unsuccessful (please contact us to find out more about this).
Do you have a wasp/hornets nest?
You may first notice wasps or hornets coming and going from a certain area on the property, such as a wall cavity/roof space/hole in flower border or lawn.
The area where frequent activity is seen is most likely the location of the nest, often deep inside attic eaves or air bricks/vents.
A newly created wasp nest is the size of a golf ball, by the end of the Summer season these can grow to up to 30cm plus in size and contain between 3,000 – 5,000 wasps.
Hornet nests can grow up to 60cm wide and contain around 700 hornets by the peak of their season (mid-summer).
ACD Pest Control advises all our customers to avoid approaching the nest as this can cause wasps and hornets to become aggressive, increasing the chance of our customers being stung.
Wasp Biology
Queen wasps lay thousands of eggs in hexagonal cells during the Spring and Summer months, these then hatch into larvae (fed by worker wasps) and develop over a period of 4 weeks, subsequently pupating within 2 weeks into an adult wasp.
Adult wasps are 10-20mm long and have a distinctive black and yellow coloration.
